Look To The Dawn
Julian R. Drake
New York: Vantage Press, 1952.
First edition. Hardcover. Item #1606
Very good or better in a very good or better unclipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing some slight wear to the spine at crown and foot; spine lightly sunned, with a small chip at mid; minor edgewear along the upper front and rear panel; corners bumped. This copy signed by the author on the front free endpaper. A solid copy of this uncommon title (no other copies currently listed on line, and only barely represented in OCLC), an unusually earnest first novel about the New South, as personified by Roland Droch, the protagonist. who is foiled in his attempts to live a godly life by the machinations of the "evil and profane Judge Whitlow, his mistress and his scapegrace son." It cannot be said that this novel is an overlooked 'Gone With The Wind,' or anything close to it in terms of literary achievement; but there is a raw and painfuly honest voice in this text, struggling to be heard. As noted, uncommon in the trade and in institutional holdings, and so even less common when signed.
